Missionary Cooperative Appeal

The US Catholic China Bureau has been participating in the annual Missionary Cooperative Appeals since 1999. The MCP presents us with our most effective means to share the Good News of the Church in China with the US Catholic Church. It also enables us to appeal to American Catholics for their prayers and financial support for their sisters and brothers in the Faith in China.

In 2009, representatives of the Bureau spoke at some parishes in different dioceses.

USCCB Staff:

Rev. Michel Marcil, SJ - Executive Director: was born in Montréal, Québec. He is an expert in Chinese religious questions. He served as a missionary in Taiwan from 1966 to 1978. Back in Canada in 1978, he was the founding Director of Amitié-Chine, he co-founded the Canadian Catholic Roundtable on China, and co-chaired the ecumenical Canada-China Program. Since 1983, Fr. Marcil has visited China regularly and has been invited to teach at the Sheshan Seminary near Shanghai. In 1998, he was assigned to work in California as Director of the Inter-Friendship House Association for visiting scholars from China. He also served as Research Fellow and Program Coordinator at the University of San Francisco Ricci Institute. He holds an M.A. in Philosophy, an M.A. in Pastoral Philosophy from Université de Montréal and a B.A. in Chinese Language from Fu-jen University in Taiwan.

Sr. Janet Carroll, MM - USCCB Scholar: served as Executive Director of the U.S. Catholic China Bureau from 1989 to 2003 and travels frequently to China. Prior to this she served as Advisor on the People's Republic of China and the ASEAN States to the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. From 1956-1972 she served as a missionary in Taiwan. She has frequently lectured or served as a panelist on Church in China issues, is the author of articles in such journals as China Church Quarterly and Missiology, and has been a leader in ecumenical and mission organizations. She holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Yale University, a Ph.D. honoris causa from Siena College, NY, and was recipient of the Papal Honor, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1987.

Mengpin Hsiao - Administrative Assistant: started with the Bureau in May 2008 with responsibilities for program and office administration; layout and production of the China Church Quarterly; and maintenance of the USCCB website and database.
